Kingsbury lies in the heart of NW9 suburbia - but the houses and flats designed by Ernest Trobridge are the antithesis of the respectable semi.

They serve up a treasure trove of diverse delights with their turrets, fortresses, Tudor styles, thatched roofs and diverse chimneys.

Trobridge latched onto the post-WW1 housing shortage by purchasing ten acres - and created English architecture through the ages at a price within the realms of ordinary folk.

He engaged in long battles with local planners to make the traditional materials of thatch, stone and wood available to all.  This Irish-born architect lived in the area from 1915 until his death in 1942 from diabetes – having refused insulin through his beliefs.
